Male, muses

Some time ago I made a bas-relief of the three muses (female), but when a gay friend of mine said, “great, but would look better as men”, I thought, “well, why not!?”  I’m really pleased with this piece.

The piece it around 12cm x 12cm and made from polymer clay.2013-03-04 19.22.00

Finished, but no picture just yet…

I finished my latest piece, but there’s no picture yet, as I feel I ought to let the person who’s having it see it first.

Watch this space (tomorrow night I expect).

I’m going to start my first big sculpture in stone soon,  so I’ve decked out my work area in plastic (to keep the dust down).  I think Dexter Morgan would be impressed!

Another small sculpture I finished last night, based upon the character Arlen from the excellent novel, ‘The Painted Man’ by Peter V. Brett.  http://www.petervbrett.com/

He’s made out of polymer clay and is around 5cm in length.

I had a Tweet from Peter Brett himself, “Wow. Incredible sculpture of the Warded Man by @Darrell_Hayward”, “I love it”

For those that don’t know, the Warded Man is the alternate name for The Painted Man.  To follow Peter on Twitter, use @PVBrett

She’s done!

Here we go – my work for the past 5/6 months, a bit at a time, while doing other stuff!  The problem occurs in that it is ‘shave a bit off, add a bit here, wait for it to dry, get on with life, next day….’ etc.  I guess if I were to do one in one go it would be 4 weeks or so, Monday to Friday, 8 hours a day.  Perhaps net time I’ll put a timer on each time I do a bit!  Anyway, here she is, Cleopatra, based upon a painting by Sam Weber, done for National Geographic.  Please take a look at the original, which is beautiful. http://sampaints.com/2011/11/22/national-geographic/

She was a little hard to do, seeing as I only had a side-on reference, but I hope I did his painting justice.

She is made of air-dry clay and is full (head) size.  Better photos will be posted when the weather (ie amount of daylight) improves!

Another sneak preview!

Have just finished this, after deciding that I could do no more with the hands – Air-dry clay is too crumbly for small work!  Still, I’m happy with it.

Not based on anything – truely original and is around 20cm.  Also, not sure what to call her, so suggestions are welcome.

Eeek, my hands have solidified!

Another view of the one I’m working on…The hand is a pain,  as the material is really ‘crumbly’ at that scale.

Sold!

Just thought I would publish a picture of my latest ‘Rape of Proserpina’ – I couldn’t bear to part with my first one, so when someone offered to buy it, so I made another, which did actually come out better than the first I feel.  I also felt I couldn’t sell a piece unless I was 100% happy with it.
